Gaines builds up the supsense between the confrontation between Robert X and Reverend Martin by talking to him about what he wants to get off his chest, leaving Reverend Martin with thoughts of Robert X and who he is to him.
Gaine uses the characters thoughts, the loss of a character, and the phobia of the characters to display suspense. Throughout the novel, Gaine shows Robert X's character have several emotions like anger and depression (31, 26 - 28), making you yearn for the confrontation between X and Martin because you were not sure what you were expecting from the character. While, Gaine does the "push-pull" method as he literally had the protagonist so close to meeting and suddenly an unexpected situation occurs, Martin falling and Robert leaving. Also, in the story while you were excited for the confrontation you were worried for what the character would do in the story because X has shown to be someone psychologically dealing with his feelings for Martin carelessly and was hesitant of meeting Martin (28).
