Questions from chapters 5-8

1. Do you think that Robert X's behavior is caused mostly on his father leaving?

2. When Phillip Martin looked into his son's face why did he look for hatred first?

3. What is the purpose of Robert emphasizing the word 'Father'?

  1. 1 - X's behavior is caused mostly by Martin. Then again, he is entitled to behave the way he does because he obviously hasn't psychologically healed when it comes to his father.
2 - Martin never particularly looked for 'anger' but instead just searched for any type of emotion that would give him entail on how his son, X, felt about what he was saying.
3 - He emphasizes it, but either emphasizes it to remind him of his 'title' in their relationship or to be kind of sarcastic as he calling Martin "father" who was never in his life or never acted as a father but suddenly wants to redeem himself and become one.

  2. 1. I think Robert X behaves the way he does due to the fact that his father has not made any effort into visiting the family he created.
    2. Because the first time Robert X looked at his father, his father saw nothing but hatred because of his absence.
    3. I think Robert X's purpose of emphasizing the word father toward Reverend Martin is to let Reverend Martin know he's hurt because, he didn't never had a so called "father" figure in his life.

    1. 1. I do believe his actions are somewhat based on the fact that his father left but i think his actions are mainly based on his own emotions & the idea he has that his father is a bad person.
      2. I don't think he looked for hatred i think he expected hatred because he knows he did his own family grimy so what else could he expect to see.
      3. I see it as being a sarcastic remark because they both know he was far from being what a far should be.
